Cons: The recent drama with between WordPress’ Matt Mullenweg and WPEngine around WordPress forced takeover of ACF (Advanced Custom Fields) and the subsequent split of that product into separate ACF and SCF development and maintenance tracks, is relevant here.
Why?
There are reports that Upsell Plugin is built with ACF as an in-built dependency. You can’t - as of right now - have Upsell plugin without getting ACF. That doesn’t matter for many, but for some, that’s a deal breaker.
Here are some links on the “ACF vs SCF” (WordPress.com vs WP Engine/Flywheel) conflict.
Some of The Backstory:
Advanced Custom Fields - For many WordPress pros, ACF is what turned WordPress into a true CMS (content management system), one flexible enough to meet the needs of modern web devs. It got bought by WPEngine after over 10 successful years.
WordPress.org - an open source (supposedly) - platform, has a commercial sister organization, WordPress.com (Automattic) led by Matt Mullenweg (founder of WordPress foundation). Matt expressed some hostility to WPEngine and similar companies gaining privately from what was publicly contributed open source projects, AND THEN MADE AN AMAZINGLY AGGRESSIVE move, grabbing (many say, “Stealing”) ACF’s WordPress.org listing and essentially commandeering all the free users, and past reviews.
Today, there’s the original ACF - you’ll have to go the link above to obtain it, and get updates and maintenance from its original creators, now part of WPEngine, and then there’s …
SCF - Secure Custom Fields (SCF) - the “new name” for the previous ACF that was taken over forcibly by Wordpress dot org
WordPress Redditors react: You can see that many, many, are not happy. And some even report removing their clients from WordPress period. Having said that, the single biggest platform for websites in the world is … WordPress. That’s just not going to change any year soon. Too much forward momentum.
WordPress Redditors consensus: When in doubt, stay with the original ACF team. This makes a lot of sense. That means, websites already with ACF should go to www.AdvancedCustomFields.com and download the plugin from there, and continue to get updates from them. This is the option I’d recommend as well.
